Thanks so much for the detailed reply, this is great stuff, I need experts like yourself to give feedback so the mod can progress! I cannot do this by myself, its the power and knowledge of the people that makes Brutal Heretic!

#1. I have noted the secret issue for e1m2 so allow me to test this out, I have never heard of this issue and I always remove secret/kill count on the mapscreen in options so I need to revert the changes and test this out!

#2. When you level up in Brutal Heretic you gain more health and progress to unlock new alt fire modes for the weapons, combine with the Tome of Power you now have 28+ fire modes for all total weapons, that was a nightmare to implement as it was broken and not finished when I was granted permission to update the mod, its all fixed now. I personally added 14+ new firemodes.

#3. Its highly recommended to use the NZDOOM Engine for all ZDL Editions, if you check out Uncle Rustys screenshots kindly showcased here you can see the washed out colors on gzdoom. I dont see any version when booting up Brutal Heretic? Could it be my low resolution? Please allow me to test this out! I'll see if it works by emulating a higher resolution maybe?

#4. Let me get back to you with this, I believe it may have been removed as Brutal Heretic adds the random drops from enemies?

#5. I dont have a Brutal Heretic Starter Guide right now but I will look into writing one similar to Brutal Hexen Starter Guide over at the Compendium panel.

Thanks so much for the feedback here, allow me to check out the issues and debug, I'll report back ASAP.

Thanks for visiting NZDOOM.

Wow! Very cool! You're welcome.

I found a package on line (not sure where) someone offered the MOD along with Gzdoom and I just thought it was an official release. The filename is Brutal Heretic RPG HD3D.rar I just noticed that THAT archive has a data folder which contains Brutal Heretic * v2. So I guess I had better replace that and the NZdoom engine.

As I said it comes with GZDoom but I'm searching now for NZDoom which is not on my system.
If you have a link to a new download I could give you my opinions on that once it's up and running. Obviously this may all be moot due to the fact I'm running an older version.

This is all so confusing, but fun! Hope I can be a part of keeping the nightmares alive.

Al.

Thanks for visiting NZDOOM.

I was wondering if you could verify I have the external files correct in the main ZDL window. Looks fantastic so far, but I want to get it right.

Hello BlazinHammerPaws and thanks for the reply.

Yes sir the mod order is correct there thats great but I see that you added ResurrectUpdate.pk3 if you play Single Player you can remove this from the list as this is for COOP mode. We make separate ZDL profiles for both SP/COOP mode for easy loading so you could save this ZDL profile as 'Brutal_Heretic_COOP'

Thanks so much for the support for ZDL, hope you are happy with the update, I like the orange accents you have there, looks really cool! I also noticed you using gzdoom for Brutal Heretic? You should try out the NZDOOM Engine for correct dynamic/sector lighting and correct colors. Then paste the HERETIC_NZ_OPTIONS.ini from the mod into the NZDOOM directory. You can easily switch different source ports with ZDL top right of window.

Hope this helps, thanks again and hope to speak soon.

Excellent! Thank you! NZDOOM has been installed. Still tweaking the brightness, contrast and gamma. What settings do you recommend?

Hello BlazinHammerPaws and thanks for the reply.

I dont change any brightness, contrast or gamma on the source port but please make sure that Dark sector mode is selected, it should already be set to Dark sector mode as you implemented the .ini but please double check and the colors should be perfect.

Options / Display options / Hardware renderer / Sector light mode

Its also highly recommended to set the graphics card options to RGB Full range 0-255 4:4:4

Hope this helps, thanks and just let me know if you need any help setting up the colors for the graphic card.

Thats great to hear you started up the updated mods, should be more fun with the new episodes. To celebrate the new Heretic+Hexen release we updated the ZDL Steam Edition to include Dual Mode (Light/Dark theme) and Grey Mode (Locked grey theme) Free to download so grab yourself the new ZDL v5.4.

Ok the new update isnt ready yet as we need to upscale to rest of the new sprites but I have finished the HUD for Brutal Hexen so its now fully scalable, when the update is out work will begin on Brutal Heretic to update the HUD etc.

Thanks so much for showcasing the issues with 32:9, look how bad and washed out gzdoom colors are and its way too bright. I can only replicate the resolution and I get like 0.1 FPS but thats all I need to debug the issue.

Also the HUD is stretched on Brutal Hexen 32:9 can you please try and force the aspect ratio to 21:9 try and get the HUD elements the same size dimensions as the screenshots here.

Thanks again Uncle Rusty for all the help, please get the new ZDL its free to download and please show me a screenshot of ZDL at 32:9!

Take care Uncle Rusty and hope to speak soon.

Thanks for the additional info, glad to hear you're still working on an additional update! I did test out the HUD options as well in Brutal Hexen, for both NZDoom and GZDoom. In Hexen, I'd say the weapon scaling looks a lot better and I don't beleive the weapons are getting stretched.

And yes regarding the colors, in Heretic NZDoom over GZDoom does make a big difference, as it NZdoom looks much better since it seems to add a lot of shadows to the scene. Interestingly though, NZDoom vs GZdoom for Brutal Heretic look roughly the same to me in terms of visuals and shadows. Note that I am using HDR injection via SpecialK, so those images aren't exactly what I see since windows screen capture doesn't support HDR, and I don't think imgur does either for uploading jpegs.

One last note, so I did try to test out forcing the image scaling to 21:9 in both Brutal Heretic and Hexen in NZdoom. This results in the whole image getting stretched to 21:9 aspect ratio, so on my 32:9 monitor this looks similar to as if you were to strech a 4:3 image to 16:9, so not good. Gzdoom doesn't fully suppport 32:9 either technically, but it does work with the correct FoV. In either case, it seems like whatever updates you've added to Hexen over Heretic, do fix the weapon scaling issue at both 21:9 and 32:9, so looking forward to the next release for Heretic to add the new sprites/scaling fix as well!

PS, I joined your patreon as a supporter so I can continue to support the project and the site hosting.

Hello Uncle Rusty and thanks for the reply.

Yes indeed hopefully get the update for Brutal Heretic 32:9 and fully scalable HUD ready ASAP, still working on Brutal Hexen right now the update needs to be done. Having issues with the upscale process right now but should have this sorted out.

I guess SpecialK HDR is changing much of the colors for you but without adding HDR shaders the colors are way too bright and washed out with gzdoom, you can clearly see the difference from the screenshots you posted.

Ok that was silly of me to suggest that, I apologize, just had a theory that the HUD was forced in 16:9 but thats not the case here, I sent you a DM with the screenshots, on both Brutal Heretic/Hexen the weapons are not stretched or zoomed in, only the HUD is stretched on Brutal Heretic but I will fix this, I also posted you the new HUD running in 32:9 and its in perfect aspect ratio!

NZDOOM runs fine in 32:9 so I have no idea why your weapons are zoomed in? Are you using the included .ini and have you edited any other settings? I cant seem to replicate the weapon zoomed in?

Thanks so much for the kind hearted support for NZDOOM! I have been working on the 32:9 HUD fix for you. Please check your DM for the screenshots.

Thanks again Uncle Rusty for all your support and feedback.
